Chelly Mei N. Tanpoco is a member of Earth Materials Science Laboratories and Project Technical Assistant V for the DOST-PCIEERD funded program entitled “ISCoPe: Interdisciplinary Studies on Concrete Petrography”.
Ms. Tanpoco graduated with a degree of B.S. Geology from the National Institute of Geological Sciences in UP Diliman. During her undergraduate years, she was a member of a research laboratory focused on the application of geology to various engineering concepts and developed an interest in studying landslides and geohazards assessments and mitigation. To further her academic credentials, she entered the master’s degree program for Geology at the same Institute and specialize in the characterization of construction raw materials. Using her knowledge of the geology of the Philippines, she hopes to investigate and understand the behavior of natural materials used in construction of critical infrastructures to ensure its quality to withstand natural disasters, especially earthquakes and typhoons.
Ms. Tanpoco, together with the rest of the project team, continues to conduct academic and applied researches in the field of Concrete Petrography and characterization of raw materials used in concrete to understand various deleterious reactions which may affect infrastructure quality in the country. She specifically hopes to gain further understanding on the geological and geochemical characteristics and effect of Mt. Pinatubo lahar used as fine aggregates in the construction industry as part of her master’s thesis in the geology graduate program at UP NIGS.
