About Us

The EMS Concrete Petrography Laboratory (EMS-CP) focuses on the assessment and evaluation of the quality of hardened concrete and raw materials used in its preparation. The team was established in 2017 and consists of professionals from different fields of expertise such as the natural sciences and engineering.

The general objective of EMS-CP laboratory is to introduce the use of concrete petrography as a tool to assess the quality of hardened concrete here in the Philippines. This can be complemented with existing methods for quality control and assurance of concrete such as physical tests (e.g., compressive strength test, indirect tensile strength test, etc.) While these methods provide data on concrete strength, it cannot be used to obtain textural information.

The textural and compositional information of concrete is crucial in the assessment of quality and durability. This can be obtained using concrete petrography. Moreover, it is one of the cheapest, fastest, and least invasive methods in concrete quality assessment.

The EMS-CP laboratory was certified last 2018, adhering to the ASTM-C856. It is the standard for concrete petrography implemented in Europe, North America, and some regions in Southeast Asia. Concrete Petrography requires field observations, usage of stereo microscope, optical microscope, and a fluorescent facility. These methods should be accompanied with the petrographer’s basic knowledge of geology, mineralogy, petrography, and optical mineralogy.

With the team being composed of technical and highly skilled individuals, we can assure you the best services to cater your concrete assessment needs.
